How to Become a Spoon Collector

Collecting spoons is popular for several reasons and approaches range from collecting expensive vintage spoons to collecting spoons from each place you have visited. They take little room and can be hung on the wall, which means that even the person living in an apartment has room for such items and last but not least, they serve as works of art.

There are some steps that can make spoon collecting easier, here they are:

• Deciding what type of spoons to collect, ones that are antique or spoons from vacation areas.

• When deciding to collect antique spoons, learn as much as possible about these types of spoons prior to buying any. This way, the spoon collection will look uniform, rather than haphazard and it can be worth more if the collector is educated.

• Learn the special terms that are used to describe spoons and their condition, which can save time when looking to purchase particular types of spoons. This can be especially important when deciding to collect antique spoons, rather than new city or special event spoons.

• After learning about the different antique spoons out there, determine which ones will be collected, such as spoons from the Civil War era or antique city spoons.

• Each antique spoon will have different seals or hallmarks. The people who have educated themselves will know what to look for and this can make buying certain spoons worth it financially as well.

• There are groups both in many cities and on the Internet that the spoon collector can join in order to interact with other collectors. This is a way to learn more and also a place where it might be possible to add to your spoon collection. Groups on the Internet will have newsletters, which can be educational and provide current information about spoon collecting.

• Spoons can be found in a variety of places and even antique ones can be found at odd places like an estate sale, yard sale or art auction. In many cases, the person selling the spoon is not a collector and feels it has little value.

• Decide if the spoons will be displayed and if they will, a spoon display case will be necessary.

These are some of the tips that can help a person who just started collecting spoons to understand what to look for, how to get current information, how to know the condition of the utensil and their value. These are important factors for the serious spoon collector but not so much for the person collecting spoons while on vacation from the different cities he or she visited. When collecting contemporary spoons, you don’t need as much knowledge or attention to detail as when collecting antique spoons from a certain era like the Civil War or even earlier. They are also found in different locations, like the city spoons that can be found in curio shops, versus the antique spoon that is found in collections at auctions or estate sales.
